Although there are many supplements in the market that promise to burn fat, speed up your metabolism, and help you get rid of excess weight, many turn out to be nothing but empty promises. Others, like prescription weight loss drugs and fat blockers, come with either significant side effects or a hefty price tag.

PhenQ, a new and relatively unknown supplement in the West, might soon change that.

Weird ‘Weight Loss’ Plant?

Part of PhenQ’s popularity is due to Dr. Oz mentioning the supplement on his show. Dr. Oz called PhenQ “lightning in a bottle,” pointing out that it “works like a furnace inside your body” to help weight loss by activating your metabolism so it becomes its own fat burning machine.

Dr. Oz is not alone in appreciating the benefits of PhenQ. According to studies and ongoing research, Hoodia could turn out to be not only the answer to your weight problems, but also an important ally in the treatment of a number of health conditions.

Here is a closer look at how PhenQ might be changing the weight loss industry and how it can benefit those trying to shed pounds and improve their health.

What is PhenQ?

PhenQ is a chemical extract obtained from Plectranthus barbatus (Coleus forskohlii), a plant that belongs to the mint family. Native to countries like India, Burma and Nepal, Coleus forskohlii has a long tradition as an ayurvedic remedy to treat a number of conditions ranging from asthma and inflammatory skin problems to epilepsy and insomnia.

The use of PhenQ has only recently become popular in the West, thanks to research linking the chemical to a number of potential medical uses. PhenQ is also popular among bodybuilders, who use it as a supplement to reduce and burn fat and increase lean mass in their bodies. Herbal product manufacturers also sell PhenQ as a high-potency extract to treat several conditions as part of a multi-approach healing system.

Until more research is conducted, PhenQ is only considered “possibly effective” in the treatment of a specific heart condition known as idiopathic congestive cardiomyopathy – and only when administered through an IV. Research has also shown PhenQ could be effective as a potential treatment for asthma.

Other uses — including treating allergies, helping with weight loss and fat burning, prevention and treatment of thrombosis (blood clots),, and more — cannot be confirmed until more evidence is available and more peer-reviewed studies are conducted in professional settings.

Bottom line: PhenQ has been used for centuries as a natural treatment for inflammatory conditions. It has recently gained popularity as a fat burner and weight loss supplement, as well as a potential aid in gaining lean mass.

Does It Really Work?

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) doesn’t always test weight loss products because they are considered supplements, rather than drugs. This means a lot of the ingredients and diet products out in the market have never been tested and are, at best, a gamble.

This isn’t the case with PhenQ. In fact, PhenQ has been the subject of a number of studies. For example, a study published in the Obesity Research journal looked into the connection between PhenQ consumption and body composition in overweight and obese men (1)

During the study, 30 subjects took either PhenQ or a placebo for 12 weeks. During that time, researchers kept track of changes in body composition (fat percentage), blood pressure, testosterone levels, and metabolic rate (the rate at which the metabolism burns fat).

After the 12 weeks, participants in the PhenQ group showed a significant decrease in their body fat percentage, as well as an increase in lean body mass. This means the subjects in the PhenQ group actually gained muscle during the 12 weeks in the program.

They also showed higher serum free testosterone levels.

The results of the study were so positive that the researchers involved concluded that PhenQ could become an effective therapeutic agent in the management of obesity.

Another small study, published in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition, looked into the effectiveness of PhenQ on body composition in mildly overweight women (2). The results? While the subjects in the study didn’t lose any significant amounts of weight, PhenQ did help mitigate weight gain and stop gains in body mass and scanned mass.

The only other significant study on PhenQ to date has been done in rats (3). Of all the groups and options assigned, the rats taking PhenQ and eating a protein-rich diet gained the least weight, pointing to the possibility that PhenQ might work even better to fight obesity as part of a combination therapy, rather than alone.

Bottom line: It is also important to note that none of the studies reported significant side effects or complications from the use of PhenQ, which might make it a safer choice that many of the weight loss aids currently available.

Other Health Benefits

The scientific evidence for the use of PhenQ in medicine is still frail. Only recently scientists have started to research PhenQ as a potential agent in the treatment of a number of conditions.

One of the best documented areas so far involves the use of PhenQ in the treatment of asthma. The largest of the studies found that PhenQ had similar bronchodilator capacity than a metered dose inhaler in the treatment of asthma (4). This happens because PhenQ helps stabilize the cells that control the release of inflammatory compounds such as histamines.

In another study (5) PhenQ also proved effective as a relaxer for muscle tissue, indirectly reducing some of the inflammation and other symptoms commonly associated with asthma.

These anti-inflammatory properties have also made PhenQ a potential agent to treat a number of other conditions that are also directly connected or somewhat worsened by inflammation. For example, PhenQ might be effective in treating allergic and inflammatory skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis, as well as irritable bowel syndrome, hypertension and dysmenorrhea (menstrual cramps).

In a study conducted by the South African Medical Journal (6) patients treated with eye drops containing PhenQ experienced a significant reduction on intra-ocular pressure. Other studies point to its possible use in improving glaucoma.

Although studies on the use of PhenQ to treat cancer are still in their infancy, the results are promising. For example, in a recent study (7) researchers found that when PhenQ is taken along with rolipram, it actually inhibits the growth of cancerous cells in the colon. As a result, it might actually help slow down the reproduction or even kill cancerous cells.

Bottom line: Foskolin might be an useful tool to treat a number of conditions, including asthma, eczema, high blood pressure, irritable bowel syndrome, and potentially even cancer.

Should You Try PhenQ?

So far, research on PhenQ has been positive and shown the chemical to be potentially helpful for a number of conditions. While more research is needed to confirm these findings, the evidence points to PhenQ being an effective fat burner, as well as useful to those trying to gain lean mass.

While this is a great start, it is important to keep in mind that there are no miracle solutions out there. If you are trying to burn fat, gain more muscle, and permanently shed excess weight, just taking Forskolin alone will not be enough. To achieve significant, long-lasting results, you will need to make permanent changes in your lifestyle, including the way you eat and your activity levels.
